Amen to the community center for most or all of COA activities. Harwich does a great job of combining the two facilities.

The Community Center would be the perfect location for the COA to use. Handicapped accessible, gym, workout room, elevator to all the floors, full kitchen with plenty of seating for their functions, and tons of meeting rooms. Every time we go by the COA, there are never many cars and half are probably volunteers or staff. Wake up everyone, get out on May 6th and vote NO. No means No. They are lying to us about the cost. They say they could use the current COA for housing? What is that going to cost? They are trying to lump both of these together to get their way. My husband went to the Community Center today and check to see the situation. No one was using any of the rooms, some were playing pickleball, only one room was set up for Retired Men's Club.

The Cape Cod Times is adequate, just adequate...John Whelan, and I beg to differ with you on their Sports coverage. Their deadline is too early to catch anything you might want to know, they force you to rely on the 'net to catch scores and such. I don't really look at the Sports anymore, I read the paper every day and the sports coverage is so over. Nothing new there. Used to be more up-to-date than the Globe. We still get the Times because Mom loves the crossword puzzle!!! I like Cynthia Stead's column too.

Just saw a map yesterday that showed that Hardings Beach was on the wish list for the Cape Cod National Seashore, back in 1959 or so, along with Morris Island. Bob McNeese didn't want the additional traffic in town so they fought against the CCNS being in Chatham except for North Beach.
Richard G. Ryder
Eastham, MA USA - Tue 12/17/2013 - 17:28:55
The town acquired Ernest L. Rogers' thirty acres east of the Harding's Beach Rd. town landing in 1945 for $10,000. The town voted in 1953 to add 230 acres for "bathing beach purposes." The selectmen were worried, or so they reported in 1950, that the state would acquire the land for a state beach.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me about the history of Hardings Beach?
I was told that it was taken by eminent domain but I don't know when,
or from whom, or if it was controversial. I believe there are grandsons
of the original owners still in West Chatham.

Bob, in my opinion there are two reasons for reassigning the harbormaster to the supervision of the police chief: 1. Sean Summers. He's had it in for Stuart for years, and the previous town manager wouldn't fire Stuart, or put him under the supervision of the police chief. Instead, Hinchey had the fire chief supervise the harbormaster. 2. This board hired Jill, and she is indebted to the people who hired her, although according to Florence, board members don't get involved in personnel matters, Sean's memo shows that he did.

Mama says we all got a kernal of meanness inside us. A place to go and hide where there are no brothers and sisters and mamas and papas and nobody matters but us. A place where we don't ever have to share the cake or ever have to smile when we don't mean it. Where all we gotta do is what we want, and we don't have to answer to no one about nothing. All we gotta do is make sure we're the ones who survive. "Cause not everybody makes it. Nope. Not everybody can find that hard place in their hearts. And for those who can't ...well then... it's gonna be a long row to hoe. Life's gonna chew em up and spit them out. Leavem nothing but a shell with the nut gone, until by the time the end rolls around, they ready to go, 'cause they ain't lived nothing but lies,so nothing they got in the end is worth fighting for. Before taking the Chatham job Chief Mark Pawlina was a deputy chief in Hartford responsible for overseeing over 70 homicide investigations a year. He was one of the most respected police officers on the force, this by both police officers and the community. He had a reputation of being very community oriented and responsive to the public while at the same time managing to address some of the worst criminals imaginable. I have talked to him numerous times and each time heard how impressed he was with the town residents, police force and elected officials in Chatham. Chief Pawlina is a good man and Chatham is lucky to have him.

They're from LAST year when I was a bit quicker...will attempt to do it today but no guarantees...however, in the meantime, look at the pix on the Chronicle web site and Tim Wood's YouTube 3 min video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZHJH9ZhoNE

My apologies, John. No need to explain. My email was in reaction to these (below) from you which seemed to indicate pics were already up -- thought I was doing something wrong by not searchng correctly or in the right place. No worries on this end. Thank you for everything you do.

I've just added three more pix from parade taken by the Fulcher's of Don Nickerson's float...

Tom and others: My apologies to my faithful forum users, but I've still not finished getting the July 4th parade pix uploaded to Photo Album! Blame it partially on my eye problems, but also on other tasks that needed doing here at cottages...In past years, I did it quite quickly so y'all got used to that but this year is not the same, and I'm sorry about the delay, ok?

From about 1:15am to 10:30am+- today, the server that runs this site was down and users got a "server forbidden" error...sorry about that, but I've got no control of that...we had to wait for a guy to reboot the system in NYC...it's one of the disadvantages of using HCoop, but the very low cost makes up for the occasional outage.

For all of you interested in North Beach, I've recently created a new website, www.chathamnorthbeach.com where I'm trying to aggregate as much info as possible on the beach, the current erosion and past history. It's updated daily with new photos of the beach tip taken from Scatteree, plus erosion reports by Bill Sargent. This is totally separate from my gig at The Chronicle, although I'm using (with permission) some resources from the paper (photos, past news stories). I'm interested in feedback on the site, which is still sorta new. Thanks for any help you can give!

To answer you question about the photos: The aerials are in the Photo Album which is accessed via links on the Main Index page or Site Map, for example. There is also a panoramic shot that I'd not put in album, so you'll find a link in a Town Common posting for Nov 08, 2007...and about IE...not sure how you've not picked up that one, even with being on the Mac side: Internet Explorer! As in IE6 or IE7...any more questions? Feel free to ask! Thanks for posting also!

Well, I just tried it using FireFox and Opera...both worked fine also...have you tried either of those as alternatives? I've found that I have to use FireFox to access Bank of America as using IE6 causes my system to go 100% CPU while pages load, and it takes 20-40 seconds also, instead of almost instantly...BoA support has no clue as to why.

Glad that worked! It's typical of Internet Explorer to initially show the full size image for a brief second, and then reduce it to fit the current window...so when you encounter this in other cases, hover over the bottom right corner of the image and see if that special Expand thingy shows...I have to do it fairly often on various images found on the Net.

Lisa, I'm presuming you are using IE, right? If so, have you used the "Expand to regular size" (the large 4-arrow thingy) that appears when you hover over the lower right corner of the image? In this case, hover over the "N" arrow on the map and you should see it. When it's expanded to 'normal' size, it takes three 'PageDn'/'PageUp' keys on my system to view entire image.

I decided to list here some of the criteria I use to determine what to do with a topic that appears to be non-Chatham:
1) Is it written by a regular poster or someone new? Regulars get more leeway!
2) Is it a topic that may irritate other users? Politics and religion are two examples, but historical ones usually are ok...
3) Current activity level? Quiet times are best for this type of post.
4) Am I able to monitor it somewhat? There are times when I'm away from PC...
5) Something of interest to others? Sometimes I let it go for a bit and see.

The jingle topic meet most of the above so that's why I let it go, but wanted to also remind folks that this shouldn't become the typical or normal type of thread here. Ok? Does that help y'all understand that I'm not 100% against non-Chatham threads, but take a number of factors into consideration, and prefer some Chatham or Cape connection.

For those who got here via link from the CoC newsletter: That link was slightly incorrect (as this sub-forum is only for topics about this website), so you'll need to click on the link in the white box (left side) that says "Index to Chat-M-Room", ok? A reminder from Donnie about the role Parker Romkey played with the old C & V.Meter installer. Johnnie Heron was with Bub Chase on the local repair truck
After the 1938 hurricane, I nearly got them in trouble, by working the winch in their truck in resetting the light poles. One morning, a truck came along, and it was Alaric Coffin, the district supervisor, and you can bet I jumped out of the truck in a hurry, ao as to not be seen operating that equipment for them at age 12. It really was a big help.
The local Cape and Vineyard office was next to the old A & P on main street, and the meter readers were David, Raymond, Norman, Edmund and Kenneth Nickerson. Ken Pratt was the office manager.

Bernie, while it IS true that most of the spams are using a "backdoor" (which I am unable to fully block, unfortunately), they are originating in Russia, China. Korea, India, etc.

To all: In order to block some of these spams that have gotten posted, I've added a new length test for the comments area, which should not affect 99.9% of normal posts...but should you get a "Post Blocked" error, let me know via email or phone and I can assist you with reason why, ok?

Sorry you are still getting these spams. They must drive you crazy. I'm no computer expert, by an means, but I thought they might possibly originate in Clearwater, Florida. It's just a guess, but you might want to look for something of a backdoor connection down there.

The spams appear to be codes for unique ringtones embedded in Chinese cell phones. Weird, but true. Hope this helps.

How wonderful to see the 250th Anniversary Celebration photograph from July 29, 1962. Although I was not there, two people clearly stand out:

HAROLD TUTTLE - "Tut" Chatham native and long time Chatham Postmaster -"Mr. Chatham" back then(looking at the photo JUST to the right of the podium- the man with the dark suit, white shirt and dark tie - glasses and whitish hair), resided at wife's old family home (Eldredge, Kelley, Baker, etc) in South Chatham and on Hallet Lane near Chatham center.

HARRIET (Baker) TUTTLE - Standing just to Harold Tuttle's right - is his wife, Harriet, with the white hair and the same height as Tut. They are the parents of Pamela, Jane and Ann, all married and two of whom live on Cape Cod. Harriet is Mrs. Chatham in those days, native born in South Chatham.

They are both deceased (buried in South Chatham Cemetery) and would now be +/- 100 years of age. Harriet was my mother's cousin. Harriet and Tut were very special people with a great zest for life and a lifetime love for Chatham.

In the continuing effort to fight spam from getting on here, I've added some code that will now check how long it's been since anyone attempted to post a message...in normal usage, this shouldn't affect you at all, but if you happen to see a page that says "too soon", you've hit this block...in which case, waiting the number of seconds shown should (in most cases) allow your entry to proceed.

Alao, should you make an error and get one of the other warning pages, and fix your mistake, you'll need to wait a few seconds to retry or you may be blocked until delay time is up...this should have the side benefit of helping block any duplicate posts...I realize this may be a pain, but the more those spammers try and break in, I need to update my 'locks' to counteract when possible, ok?

I was in Chatham on Friday and had my camera so took a few pix of the Main St School and new Community Center under construction...They are now on the Photo Album for those who are away from here and may be interested in how it's looking.

To those interested in Randy Howes. I will be waiting to hear more also. To read about the previous story of Randy. Go to GOOGLE and enter the following, "Grafton Howes" for search. Use the quote marks.

To those interested in "HMS Chatham" enter this for search in GOOGLE and you will get more than you really need to know about the vessel. Again use the quote marks.

Google is remarkable !!

Regards (73) to all Bill R.

About the flag and another site: I just checked in my original copy of TeleCam archives and found the link you describe, which is to http://www.telecamsystems.com/nowyou.htm which is a banner page related to not forgetting 9/11...I did not carry this over to my version, but it wasn't because I don't care or agree, just made it site a bit simpler and less coding...ok?

Silas: You'll be happy to know that people are working on possibilities for saving the Coast Guard boathouse. Hopefully there'll be a resolution that will meet with unanimous approval.

George and Jane P thanks for the welcome. I have seen a couple of references to a Warren Ruggles. Could you be thinking of Warren ROGERS ?

It may be of interest to some of you to know that the Powers that be have given their blessing to the removal of the old Coast Guard Dock, and the demolition of the associated building. While I can understand the reasoning behind the pier, I find the destruction of the building to be the loss of a Chatham icon in order to make room for another ugly edifice that will be inhabited probably less than one third of the year.

BR, you may ask any question you want! I'll ask one in return, however..might you send an email to me so I have a way to contact you off-list if needed? As I have NO idea who you are, which I don't insist on knowing, but prefer to, at least privately. But having an email contact, at least, will be to your benefit.

Anyway, I reject any post that contains ANY characters which fall outside the original ASCII text range as part of spam blocking...Yes, I probably could add some special code just for these handful of characters, but it'd be much easier for users to either type directly into comment box or use a less fancy external product, such as NotePad/WordPad, or avoid those options in Word...having extra code for a few characters that occur on very rare occasions is something I might explore in the future, but not at this time, ok?

John,
Thanks for explanation, but a question, if I may. Why does your code reject the quotes in the first place? Can the code be changed without too much trouble, or is there some good reason for having the code reject these things? Pardon my ignorance.

Here's a slightly better description adapted from the new text I added last nite to FAQ:
Using the "Replace as you type" options ('straight quotes with smart quotes' & 'symbol chars with symbols') in WORD/Tools/Auto Correct/Auto Format As You Type causes the most issues. These need to be turned OFF before typing text in Word to correctly generate special characters that will not be rejected by my code. There is a section in Word Help dealing with converting existing text back to only those characters which actually appear on the keyboard.

John, there were no quotes in my post, only a couple of double dashes that MS Word automatically makes into a long dash, that must have been the problem. Wouldn't that be easy to fix so you can use dashes? Don't know what you mean by curly whatevers. Don't understand technical jargon, sorry.

I've had two attempts in recent days to post an entry that failed due to use of curly/smart quotes...the last was by Don E tonite...I called him and found that he had cut/paste the text from a Word document...as noted on the FAQ page, this can cause a reject...so IF you wish to cut/paste, make sure that any quote marks used do not look sorta like commas but instead look like a plain single/double tick mark, ok? Thanks!

There are NO captions and pix size is limited to 640x480 but at least it's something to start with!
